Two beautiful wedding globes housing papier-mâché fruit bouquets. 19th century. From 1850 to 1930, it was customary to keep wedding bouquets under a globe for the duration of the wedding, traditionally ordered by the bride's mother.
For those lucky enough to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary, it was customary to give them a fruit basket....
These fruits represented the four seasons. They were chosen to recall the symbols of union.
Flowers turn into fruit. Marriage produces children.
White grapes symbolize little girls. Black grapes symbolize little boys.
Apples symbolize fertility and love. Peaches exorcise evil spirits.
